Federal Work-Study Program (FWS)
The Federal Work-Study Program (FWS) is a campus-based student aid program designed to provide a self-help mechanism, other than loans, for financing students' higher education while providing work experience as a part of the educational process. This program augments students' self-help assistance without increasing their debt. The funding for the FWS program consists of a combination of federal, institutional, and employer contributions.

Brooklyn Law School students have participated in the Federal Work-Study Program with many agencies of the federal, state and city governments, as well as the non-profit sector, over the past several years. They have utilized the program as both a means of financial support and an opportunity to gain valuable law-related experience. Employers have included the Kings County Office of the District Attorney, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and the New York State Department of Law.

Federal Work-Study awards may be utilized either on or off campus. Most recent work-study positions have been with public or non-profit organizations. In most cases, the employer will be required to contribute a 25 percent share of the student's earnings. Employers must prove their willingness to comply with program regulations by signing Brooklyn Law School's Federal Work-Study Contract before the student's first day of work.

Note: Any agency/employer that fails to sign the contract will NOT be considered an eligible FWS employer.

Federal Work-Study students are paid hourly wages that must be at least the federal minimum wage, and are typically paid $12.00 per hour. Students are required to submit signed time sheets to the Office of Financial Aid, in order to receive payment for their work hours. (Students are paid every two weeks through the BLS on-line payroll system only.)

How To Apply
Students interested in receiving Federal Work Study for the Fall/Spring academic period, must indicate so on their BLS Financial Assistance application. Awards will be based on a student’s need and availability of funds. Priority consideration is given to those students who have completed files by April 28.

Upon acceptance for FWS and PRIOR to beginning employment, the student must provide the Financial Aid Office with the following completed application material. PDF files require Adobe Acrobat Reader software (download free software).

  • Fall/Spring 2007/08 FWS application (PDF)
  • Summer 2008 FWS application (PDF)
  • W-4 withholding form 2007 (PDF)
  • W-4 withholding form 2008 (PDF)
  • Federal Employment Eligibilty Form (PDF) with acceptable documentation
  • An offer of employment letter from the employer

The Financial Aid office will send the employer a contract that outlines the student’s rate of pay, the period of employment, the employer’s contribution and the reponsibilites of the employer and the Law School.

    Work Study Time Sheet Process
All work study timesheets must be submitted online. Your Brooklyn Law School username and password are required to access the online time sheet. Select the appropriate pay period for which you have worked from the drop down menu. After you submit your time sheet online, you will be instructed to print the time sheet which MUST then be signed by your supervisor and submitted to the Financial Aid office by Thursday, 1:00 p.m. following each pay period. Please refer to the FWS Calendar 2007-2008 (PDF) for actual pay dates. If your timesheet is submitted late, you will have to wait to get paid the following pay period. There will be no exceptions.

If you need assistance completing and submitting your timesheets, please read How to Record FWS Timesheets (PDF). If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Financial Aid Office at finaid@brooklaw.edu or (718) 780-7915.

It is highly recommended you arrange for direct deposit of your pay check. Enroll now by downloading and printing the Student Direct Deposit Form (PDF) and faxing it to our office with a voided check.

As a reminder, students are not permitted to exceed a 20 hour work week when school is in session.

    Other Student Employment Opportunities
The Law School's Office of Career Services maintains a daily listing and referral service for salaried part-time, temporary and summer jobs available to current students. The School's proximity to the courts, government agencies, corporations and major law firms in both Brooklyn and Manhattan affords students ample opportunity for part-time, temporary or summer employment. Jobs related to the legal profession are available for evening students who would like to work full-time. The Office's goal is to serve as a liaison between student and employer and to equip students with the skills necessary to secure productive and satisfying employment.

Brooklyn Law School students generally use most of the available Federal Work Study funds during the summer. Not only is summer an opportunity to gain valuable work experience in your chosen field of the Law, it is also a means to reduce your student loan debt.

The summer work-study award process is separate from the Fall/Spring academic period. Students must submit a Summer Federal Work Study Application (PDF) which will be available in the Financial Aid Office or on-line by 2/15/08. The application deadline is April 1. Incomplete applications will be returned unprocessed to the student.

Important: In addition to the application process, if 2008 will be your first summer federal work study experience, it is mandatory that you attend ONE of the Financial Aid Workshops regarding federally mandated criterion and the on-line payroll process. Attendance will be taken and you must RSVP the date you will attend by calling the Financial Aid office @ 718-780-7915 or emailing your response to finaid@brooklaw.edu.

    • According to Federal guidelines and contractual agreements, Students are prohibited from accepting any other form compensation directly from their employers.
