Financial Policy
The privileges of the Law School are dependent upon the prompt payment of tuition, fees, student housing charges, and all other
debts to the law school when due. No one will be regarded as registered or permitted to attend classes until tuition and fees
have been paid, or an arrangement has been made to pay, prior to the beginning of classes. Permission to register for a
subsequent semester, receipt of academic credit, the granting of a degree, and the issuance of a certificate or transcript of any
kind, are subject to the payment of all charges, fees or other financial obligations to the law school.
Tuition Policy
Since experience has demonstrated that steadily increasing costs must be expected, the Law School reserves the right to
change or add to its tuition and fees at any time, and it is probable that tuition will increase each year.
- Students are liable for tuition based on either a three-year course of study (full-time) or four-year course of study (part-time)
and not on the number of course credits. In the event of transfer between divisions, appropriate adjustments will be made.
- Summer session fees are unrelated to the total tuition.
- Joint degree students are required to pay the full cost of tuition to the law school.
- All foreign non-matriculants who complete the Foreign Trained Lawyers Program will be required to pay the entire
prevailing tuition for at least two semesters of part-time enrollment.
Terms of Payment
Tuition is charged by the semester for all
students. Invoices are usually mailed to the student approximately one month prior to the start of a semester. Payments of
tuition must be by check or money order. If checks tendered for payment of tuition and fees are not paid upon presentation to
the maker's bank by reason of insufficient funds, uncollected funds, stopped payment or a closed account, the student will
incur a Returned Check Service Fee. This fee will be rescinded only upon presentation of documented proof that the returned
checks were the direct result of a bank error.
Students who fail to remit the entire amount of tuition by the first day of classes will be required to pay an additional Late
Payment of Tuition Fee. No student will be regarded as fully registered until all tuition, fees, student housing charges, and
other debts to the law school have been paid. Students will receive a complete financial statement of their account during the
early part of the semester.
All law school scholarships and loans awarded students are applied only to tuition costs. In cases where scholarships and
loans have been awarded for the academic year, one half of the amount will be credited to the fall semester tuition charges.
The other half of the scholarship will be similarly applied as credit to the spring semester bill. Recipients of full-tuition
scholarships for the entire academic year are still required to pay all applicable law school fees.
Recipients of New York State Tuition Assistance Program grants will be allowed credit towards their tuition in the amount of
their entitlement, provided they submit to Student Accounts their award certificate at the time tuition is remitted.
Entering students will not be granted this tuition credit for the first semester of their enrollment but will be eligible in all
subsequent semesters.
Recipients of Federal Stafford Loans whose loans are not disbursed electronically will receive an email notifying them to
come to Student Accounts to endorse the loan checks. All loan proceeds are first applied to students' outstanding account balance. Any portion of the tuition that is not covered by loans must be
paid by check or money order by the tuition date specified. In the event that the loan exceeds tuition, housing and fees due, the balance will
be refunded within ten business days, but not earlier than the first day of classes.
