To assist individuals whose resources are inadequate to finance their legal education, Brooklyn Law School annually awards grants under its Need-Based Grant Program to entering and upper class students. A portion of each of these need-based grants comes from the funds of Brooklyn Law School’s endowed scholarships. When applying for these grants, eligible students must submit the following documents to the School's Office of Financial Aid prior to the deadline date of April 30:
- A completed Brooklyn Law School Financial Aid Application.
- All parts of the Need Access application including the parents' information sections. This application should be submitted to the Access Group for analysis by April 15 to insure that the Office of Financial Aid receives the analysis by the April 30 deadline.
- A signed photocopy of your 2007 federal income tax return form 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ (with all accompanying schedules and occupations listed). If the 2007 return is unavailable, submit a notarized explanation regarding that year's earnings and a copy of the most recently filed return.
- A signed photocopy of your parents' 2007 federal income tax return form 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ (with all accompanying schedules and occupations listed). If the 2007 return is unavailable, submit a notarized explanation regarding that year's earnings and a copy of the most recently filed return.
Entering students are encouraged to submit these documents as soon as possible after applying for admission. Upper-class students must submit all required documentation prior to the April 30 deadline. Note: Failure to provide any of the required information or to adhere to deadlines may result in the denial of eligibility to receive a need-based grant. The Scholarship Committee acts on applications as they are completed and gives notification of award or denial to applicants as soon as possible prior to the commencement of each academic year.
Brooklyn Law School awards these grants to all upper-class students, in good academic standing, who demonstrate a sufficient level of financial need—based on the School's needs analysis system—and who submit all required application documents to the Office of Financial Aid in a timely manner. With respect to incoming students however, those students who place in the lower half of their entering class, on the basis of their quantifiable admission qualifications, are not eligible to receive a financial need grant during their first year of enrollment and will be notified accordingly in their letter of enrollment from the Law School. After the first year, however, such students will be eligible for consideration to receive both need-based grants and merit-based scholarships.
Students with substantial unmet financial need should strongly consider enrolling in the School's part-time division and working to earn additional income. Students may also take full advantage of the loan funds available to finance their legal education.
In calculating a student's need for financial assistance under this program, the Scholarship Committee will analyze all facets of the applicant's financial circumstances.
Need-Based Grants are awarded for a period of one academic year. One half of the award is applied to the student's fall semester tuition charges and the balance of the award is applied to the spring semester tuition charges. Renewal is contingent upon the student reapplying for a need-based grant by the required deadline and continuing to demonstrate a sufficient level of financial need.
