FAFSA | Need Access
United States citizens and permanent residents must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to be considered for federal assistance (Federal Stafford Loans, Federal Perkins Loans and Federal Work-Study). The FAFSA is available via the Internet; this is the best and fastest way to submit this form. The website address is: www.fafsa.ed.gov.
There are several ways to file a FAFSA. If you wish to file electronically, you may do so as follows:
- Students who have received a Personal Access Number (PIN) in the mail may choose to complete the Renewal FAFSA through the Internet. Renewal FAFSA on the Web eliminates the need for an independent student to follow up the electronic submission with the mailing of a signed certification page because the PIN will substitute for the applicant’s signature. To receive a PIN and apply through the Web, a student must be residing at the same address they were the previous year.
- If a student receives a Renewal FAFSA in the mail, rather than a PIN, he or she can go to the Web site listed above and request a PIN. After several identifying questions, the system will ask if the applicant is still living at the same address and, if he/she is, the system will inform the applicant that a PIN will be mailed to that address. At this time a randomly created PIN will be assigned to the Renewal FAFSA record. If a student no longer resides at the given address, he or she will not be able to submit a Renewal FAFSA through the Internet. Students may then file either a new FAFSA on line or submit a paper FAFSA.
- By using a web browser such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer you can go to the FAFSA on the Web page and complete the information online, then submit it via the Web. Note: Filing your FAFSA via the Internet reduces your chances of making errors to less than 1%. The processing time for filing on-line is the fastest and most efficient of all the filing options.
- The traditional paper version of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form. The FAFSA is available at www.fafsa.ed.gov. To obtain a paper FAFSA form, call 1-800-4FED-AID (1-800-433-3243). This application is also available upon request in the Law School's Office of Financial Aid (718-780-7915).
Once the FAFSA has been processed, the student will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR). This SAR must be forwarded to the Office of Financial Aid in order to be awarded financial aid and to be certified for federal loans and work-study. To check the status of your FAFSA or to order a duplicate report, you may contact the central processor at (800) 433-3243. You can also check the status of your application at the website listed above.
Note: FAFSA is not a loan application. If you are applying for Stafford loans, a separate loan application must be submitted.
*Please note all students who submitted a FAFSA for the 2002-2003 academic year and were either a graduate student or a senior at an undergraduate institution should have received a PIN in November or December of 2002.
