Constitutional Law

This course presents an introduction to the historical background, content, and meaning of the United States Constitution. The course focuses on such issues as: the origins and scope of judicial review; intergovernmental relations; separation of powers among the legislative, judicial, and executive branches; powers of the President; basic principles of individual rights and equal protection; due process; and state and federal regulatory powers.

Grading and Method of Evaluation

Letter grade only. Final exam.

Legal Profession

This three-credit course analyzes law and ethics governing the legal profession; it also examines the history, goals, and structure of the profession and the professional responsibility of judges. A detailed study of the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct is undertaken. Taking the course satisfies the law school's professional responsibility requirement.

Students who have earned credit for Professional Responsibility cannot take this course.

Letter grade only. Final exam.

Legal Theory Colloquium

This seminar will explore selected topics in contemporary legal theory. Subjects might include cultural cognition, new governance, hedonic adaptation, the new originalism in constitutional interpretation, etc. The course will use a colloquium format, meaning that every other week, outside authors will come speak to the class about their work. Students will be asked to write short response papers throughout the term, instead of a final exam or paper. Admission to the course will be based on a short application, consisting of a c.v., transcript, and a one-paragraph statement that describes the student's interest in the course and any topics that he or she would like to see covered.

Grading and Method of Evaluation

Letter grade with pass/fail option. A series of short papers are required.

Professional Responsibility

This course analyzes the duties and responsibilities of the legal profession, including its history, goals and structure. A detailed analysis and discussion of the Code of Professional Responsibility are undertaken.

Students who have earned credit for The Legal Profession cannot take this course.
