Four BLS students received seed money to launch new startups after winning the first annual Innovators Competition last week, hosted by the Center for Urban Business Entrepreneurship (CUBE). The winning proposals were among many that addressed legal issues and structures affecting entrepreneurial ventures and legal services for entrepreneurs.

Jared Brenner ’15 received $2,000 for his “What If (Dot) Wiki” proposal that would create a wiki based solely on legal topics, especially those concerning law lagging behind innovation. “It’s a huge honor to win and have this kind of support,” Brenner said. He plans to hold an informational session soon to encourage other BLS students to join him in the creation of the new wiki.

Tatiana Borukhova ’17 and Peter Pottier ’16 were each awarded $750 for their project aptly named SHARE (Subsidized Housing Alternatives through Renovation and Efficiency), aimed at creating affordable housing solutions for displaced families in New York City.

Austin Minogue ’16 received $1,000 for his "Law Students Causing Change" proposal, which would solicit small-change charitable donations at venues that utilize metal detectors.

The prizes were made possible through the generous contribution and support of CUBE by the Nancy and Stanley M. Grossman ’67 CUBE Fellowship Fund. Stanley Grossman presented the awards to the students, complimenting them on their creative and imaginative approaches to future challenges. CUBE is a “perfect venue” for entrepreneurial students wanting to obtain clinical experience in the practice of law, he said. “[My wife] Nancy and I are enthusiastic and want to move this ahead as rapidly as possible.”

A combined info session for all CUBE Fellowship projects will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, in the Student Lounge.
