10.24.13 Professor Lisa Smith Discusses Domestic Violence in BlogTalkRadio Interview
    Lisa Smith

One in three women worldwide have been victims of domestic violence. In observance of October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Professor Lisa Smith spoke with Dr. Annie Abram on BlogTalkRadio about legal help and support for women at risk.

Professor Smith emphasized that many police precincts now employ specialized domestic violence officers who can assist with options, from legal protections to safety planning. These services are available not just to those who have been victims of abuse, but also to those who fear potential violence in their households. She also noted a major change in the system: police are now legally required to document every time a victim calls, even if charges are not pressed.

“Physical violence can include pushing, shoving into doors or walls, or even threats,” said Professor Smith. “But I think it is harder [for victims] to know what to do in situations that involve emotional or psychological abuse.”
