Brooklyn Law School has a long and proud tradition of giving back to the community. Earlier this month, two prominent alumni, Steven S. Elbaum ’74 and Michael D. Grohman ’83, were honored by high-profile public service organizations for their distinguished service and leadership.

“Educating lawyers committed to social justice has been part of Brooklyn Law School’s mission since its founding over a century ago,” said Dean Nick Allard. “Steven and Michael are perfect examples of the kinds of legal experts that BLS produces, working tirelessly to defend those unable to defend themselves.”

Steven S. Elbaum ’74 Honored With Distinguished Alumni Award from Boys & Girls Club of America
Boys & Girls Club of America recently presented Steven S. Elbaum with its Larry D. Young Distinguished Alumni Award. Elbaum accepted the honor at the 2013 Great Futures Gala, an annual awards and fundraising dinner held on June 6 at the Museum of Natural History.

The award — presented to Elbaum by Mr. Young, CEO of Dr. Pepper Snapple — is bestowed annually to a Boys & Girls Club alumnus who has demonstrated exceptional service to improving the lives of children, and who has provided extraordinary financial support to the mission of the organization. Elbaum was selected for his “intimate knowledge of the impact of the Clubs” and for “consistently going above and beyond the call of duty in his service to Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the youth of the nation.”

In addition to his dedicated service to Boys & Girls Club of America, Elbaum remains committed to the success of Brooklyn Law School students. A 1901 Society member, he established the Elbaum Family Scholarship with his son, Lawrence S. Elbaum ’05, awarded annually to a worthy student in need of financial assistance with a preference for those who are immigrants or first-generation U.S. citizens. The son of Holocaust survivors, Elbaum was born in a displaced persons camp in Germany and immigrated to the United States as a young child.

Since 1984, Elbaum has been Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Alpine Group, Inc., an investment company with substantial experience in operating and actively managing companies. Prior to joining Alpine, Elbaum practiced law at Gifford, Woody, Palmer & Serles.

Michael Grohman ‘83 Receives Girls Educational and Mentoring Services (GEMS) Male Allies Award
Michael Grohman was recently honored as one of two inaugural recipients of the Girls Educational and Mentoring Services (GEMS) Male Allies Award for his pro bono leadership in helping trafficked girls and young women vacate their criminal convictions, along with other legal matters. Grohman was formally recognized on June 6 at The Male Allies Awards Breakfast, a fundraising event designed to generate awareness of commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking of children and young women. The award honors men who are making significant strides on behalf of these girls and women. U.S. Ambassador-at-Large Luis CdeBaca, Senior Advisor to the Secretary of State and Director of the State Department’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, was the other distinguished recipient.

A nationally recognized organization, GEMS serves young women ages 12 to 24 who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking. The goal is to empower them to escape the commercial sex industry and to help develop their full potential by providing them with empathetic, consistent support and viable opportunities for positive change.

Grohman is an active member of the BLS alumni community and generous supporter of the Law School. This past spring, he participated with other prominent alumni in a “Careers in Tax Law” panel discussion sponsored by the Tax Law Association. Grohman also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association, and a Representative in the Law Firm Challenge.

Grohman is the head of the New York office of Duane Morris and chair of its Wealth Planning Practice Group.
