Brooklyn Law School alumna Karen I. Wu ’04 has been named the 2012 recipient of the New York State Bar Association's Outstanding Young Lawyer Award.

Wu is an attorney with Perlman & Perlman, where she advises non-profit clients and companies engaged in philanthropy and social good on corporate governance, tax, fundraising, contracts, intellectual property, and regulatory matters. She also volunteers her time at Open Hands Legal Services, Inc., a nonprofit she helped establish which provides legal services and counseling to underserved residents in New York City. “It is an honor to receive this award. I feel extremely fortunate that my legal practice allows me to work with organizations that are helping to improve communities and our world,” said Wu.

Wu is an active volunteer with the Taiwan Mission Foundation, New York Christian Legal Society, the National Collegiate Table Tennis Association, and the Asian American Bar Association of New York. While a student at the Law School, she was awarded the Equal Justice America Fellowship, which sponsored her summer internship at the Community Economic Development Unit at Brooklyn Legal Services, Corporation A. “I am grateful to Brooklyn Law School for providing me with opportunities that directly impacted my career path, including a course in nonprofit law, and the ability to participate in internships with the Attorney General’s Charities Bureau and with nonprofit legal services providers engaged in community economic development work."

Sponsored by the Young Lawyers Section, the annual NYS Bar Association award is given to a young attorney with a distinguished record of service to the legal profession and the community-at-large. The award was presented to Wu earlier this year during the Bar Association's Annual Meeting in New York City.

"The dedication Karen Wu has shown as an attorney and concerned citizen provides a shining example to young professionals. We are extremely proud to call her a colleague," said James A. Barnes, an attorney at Burke & Casserly and Section Chairman of Albany, NYS Bar Association.
