In the Spring 2010 issue of LawNotes, we published a feature story entitled “Mergers & Acquisitions,” in which we shared six stories of BLS alumni who met at the Law School and married – one couple from every decade from the 1950s through the present day. The story was inspired by Joshua D. Kirshner ’04 and Amy Rozenfeld ’04, a couple who met and fell in love while at the Law School. Josh even enlisted the help of President Wexler in orchestrating his on-campus proposal to Amy!
In researching “Mergers & Acquisitions,” we discovered that hundreds of couples had met at BLS, and there are many more BLS alumni who met before or after law school. In fact, there are so many couples that we hosted a Valentine’s Day party last February to celebrate their love of the law…and each other.
We are delighted to present an ever-growing section of our Web site dedicated to couples who credit BLS as both their alma matter and their dating service. We received emails and letters from many couples who wrote in to tell us, in their own words, the story of their own “mergers and acquisitions.” We look forward to hearing from more couples, and welcome stories of all partnerships for inclusion on the site.

“We met on August 31, 1981 at a BLS orientation program for incoming first year students. Margaret was about to begin her second year and I was about to begin my third year. We had both volunteered to be orientation counselors. We were introduced by mutual friends. We were astonished to find that we had so many things in common. We had both attended St. John's University at the same time as undergraduates, we had the same major, we had the same minor, and we had the same group of friends both at SJU and at Brooklyn Law. The freaky thing is that we had NEVER MET until that particular day. It was Fate. We began dating shortly thereafter. She suffered through my bar exam; I suffered through her bar exam. Eventually, we became engaged and were married on August 31st 1985, the anniversary of the day we met! We are looking forward to our 25th wedding anniversary this year! We have three wonderful children and two dogs.”

“My husband and I met at Brooklyn Law School. He was a Legal Aid lawyer upon graduation and I was a Wall Street brat. We have now been married for almost 27 years and have one son who is 23 years old, graduating college this June. We currently live in Woodstock, New York, where we have resided for the last 21 years.”

“Dean I. Leo Glasser gathered us in Borough Hall for our first official Brooklyn Law School event for the Fall semester of 1979. As part of a speech I have otherwise entirely forgotten, Dean Glasser uttered the words that changed my life. ‘Look around,’ he said. ‘Some of you will meet life-long friends, some of you will meet your spouses.’ It was such a ‘Yeah, right – not in my lifetime’ moment that I didn’t really listen to the rest of what he said. But the next day, I found myself alphabetically paired with the man who would be my husband! We were together in Section 3, along with a group of other students who would remain our lifelong friends. It took us a while to figure out we were right for each other, but on October 7, 1984, we got married, fulfilling Dean Glasser’s wise prediction.”

“We met at BLS in the fall of 1979, started dating in February 1980 and married on April 3, 1982, just before graduation. We have been married 28 years. Our beautiful daughter, Patrice, graduated from Princeton University in 2004 with a degree in theoretical math and is now studying for a Masters degree in sociology at Oxford University.”
