Joshua S. Lev is 102 and in good health. He is living in Centennial, Colorado with his family. (07/21/08)

1930s

1930
Bernard Bierman will turn 100 on August 26, 2008. He practiced law for 11 years until 1942 when he enlisted to serve in World War II. After returning from the war, he started a career in the music business. He has six CDs on the market, and 138 of his songs have been recorded by artists including Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Harry James, Billy Eckstine, Hildegarde and Steve Ross. (03/19/08)

1949
Murray Schwartz, managing partner of the New York firm of Schwartz & Perry LLP, was selected as a 2007 Super Lawyer. Schwartz was one of nine plaintiff’s employment litigation attorneys in the New York metropolitan area named to this list. He concentrates his practice in the area of employment discrimination. Schwartz participated in a panel discussion about employment law at Brooklyn Law School in November 2007 that was hosted by the Brooklyn Law School Federalist Society. (01/03/08)

1950s

1950
Dorothy Eisenberg, a U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge for the Eastern District of New York, was presented with the New York Institute of Credit’s 20th Trustee Award at the Institute’s awards banquet in June 2008. Founded in 1918, the Institute provides commercial credit education to the financial community. Judge Eisenberg was appointed to the bench in March 1989. (07/21/08)

Percy E. Sutton, the former Manhattan Borough President, was one of four honorees recognized by the City College of New York for establishing the Search for Education, Elevation and Knowledge (SEEK) program 42 years ago, which authorized CUNY to accept low-income students who would not be admitted otherwise. The program was the first of its kind and is considered a model for Higher Education Opportunity Programs across the country. Sutton is the co-founder of Inner City Broadcasting, which owns radio stations and has other media interests; he is currently in private practice in New York. (01/03/08)

Irwin Reicher, formerly with Liner Schechter Reicher & Ofsevit, LLP, joined the New York office of Butzel Long as of counsel. He focuses his practice in the field of commercial real estate. (01/03/08)

1953
Seymour L. Schorr is a partner in the Tucson, Arizona office of Lewis and Roca LLP, practicing in the areas of real estate, corporate and general business law. Schorr is certified by the Arizona State Bar Board of Legal Specialization as a specialist in real estate law. He is also chair of the Arizona State Board of Transportation and a board member of the Regional Transportation Authority of Pima Count. (07/21/08)

Harvey Weitz, a principle in the firm of Weitz & Associates, was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the New York City Trial Lawyers Association in October 2007. Weitz was a partner in the Cochran Firm, Schneider Kleinick Weitz Damashek & Shoot for 35 years before leaving to form a new firm with his sons, Paul and Andrew `98. (01/03/08)

Robert M. Kaufman, a partner in the New York office of Proskauer Rose LLP, was appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services to serve on the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS for a four-year term. The Council provides advice, information, and recommendations to the Secretary regarding programs and policies intended to promote effective prevention of HIV, and to advance research on HIV and AIDS. Kaufman focuses his practice in the areas of health law, hospital law, multinational corporate law and personal representation. He formerly served as Legislative Assistant to U.S. Senator Jacob Javits. (07/21/08)

Edwin Silberstang wrote an updated version of his 1979 book, Winning Casino Craps, that was published by Random House in October 2007. A former criminal investigator for the Army and attorney in private practice in New York, he has written over 52 books including six novels and many gambling how-to books. (07/21/08)

Joshua S. Sparrow is living in Pensacola, Florida where he is a certified ombudsman for the Florida Department of Elder Affairs. He is also a national officer of the U.S. Coast Guard, Auxiliary and was appointed the liaison officer between the U.S. Coast Guard, Auxiliary and the Coast Guard Veteran’s Association and the Pterodactyls, the aviation wing of the Coast Guard. Robert M. Schwarzbart retired in 2002 after 27 years as a National Labor Relations Board judge. He is currently serving a third elected term on the Friendship Heights Village Council in Montgomery County, Maryland and as chair of Montgomery County’s Friendship Heights Transportation Management Advisory Committee, which advises the County Executive and Council on transportation, pedestrian safety and traffic issues. He is also a hearing officer in Internal Appeals for the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and Superior Court. (07/21/08)

1960
E. Leo Milonas, a partner in the New York office of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, is one of twelve members serving on the Judicial Nomination Commission tasked to submit candidates for Chief Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals to the governor. Milonas, a former Associate Justice of the NYS Appellate Division and NYS Chief Administrative Judge, concentrates his practice on complex commercial litigation, appeals, and alternative dispute resolution. 1961
Allan M. Palmer recently retired from the practice of law and is now working as President of Allan Palmer Laboratories, Inc., a company that manufactures cosmetic products, some of which he has invented. He ran his own practice in Washington, D.C. specializing in criminal cases. During his career, he tried over 300 cases in federal district court, briefed and argued over 40 appellate cases in federal circuit courts and 3 cases before the United States Supreme Court. He also taught legal writing and research at Georgetown University Law Center. (08/06/07)

1962
Leon Entin, a long-time officer of the Brooklyn Law School Alumni Association passed away in January 2008. Entin joined the board in 1970 and later became a vice president. During his tenure of over 30 years, he was a very loyal and active participant. Among his many activities, he served on the Editorial Board of the Law School’s news magazine at the time, Veritas. Many may remember his lively portrayal of the defendant in the Trial of Murder Case during the Homecoming festivities in April 1975. Entin maintained a private practice in Syosset, NY. (11/05/08)

Ronald B. Bianchi is a judge of the Justice Court for the Town and Village of Harrison in New York. He served as mayor of Harrison from 1998 to 2001 and Town Attorney from 1992 to 1995. (03/19/08)

Joel J. Flick was re-elected for a fourth term as Clarkstown Town Judge in New City, Rockland County, N.Y. He maintains a private practice in tax certiorari, real estate, municipal law, negligence and criminal law. (03/19/08)

Wallace L. Leinheardt, a partner in the New York office of Jaspan Schlesinger Hoffman LLP, was elected chair of the Trusts and Estates Section of the New York State Bar Association. He concentrates his practice in the areas of trusts and estates, guardianship law, elder law, and surrogates practice. He is also a member of the NYSBA’s House of Delegates and its Electronic Communications Task Force. (02/05/08)

Leonard Olarsch has been a U.S. Administrative Law Judge since 2004, hearing cases in San Juan, Puerto Rico for two years and is now assigned in the Bronx. He previously was a division chief in charge of the tort division at the New York City Corporation Counsel’s Office, and before that he was chief of the condemnation and certiorari division. Richard T. Farrell, professor of law at Brooklyn Law School, was presented with the President’s Award by the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Brooklyn at their annual dinner. A former student of his, Annalise Cottone `90, presented him with the award. (09/14/07)

1966
Janis G. Schulmeisters was awarded a Fulbright grant to lecture on maritime law at the University of Latvia’s law school during the spring 2008 semester. A graduate of the State University of New York at Maritime, where he currently teaches, he sailed as a licensed ship’s officer, with a commission in the Navy Reserve, for about three years before attending law school. While in school, he worked at Gulf Oil Corporation in its marine department. Upon graduation, he worked for New York admiralty firm, Kirlin Campbell & Keating, before joining the Department of Justice in the admiralty and shipping section, now known as torts branch- admiralty and aviation. He rose to attorney in charge of the branch. He was born in Latvia and is still fluent in that language. (01/03/08)

1967
Paul B. Bergman, who maintains a white-collar criminal defense practice in New York City, was awarded the Eastern District Award at the Eastern District Association’s annual dinner in March 2008. The Association is a 600-member, not-for-profit organization of former and current prosecutors and investigators from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York that promotes educational, charitable and social events for its members and the community. Bergman is also in his second year as president of the New York Council of Defense Lawyers. (03/19/08)

George E. Curtis, associate professor of criminal justice at Utica College in upstate New York, was named acting executive director of the college’s Economic Crime Institute. The institute provides resources, professional contacts, and internship opportunities for current students and graduates for their work in preventing, detecting, and investigating and prosecuting economic and cybercrimes. Curtis co-authored a college textbook, Proactive Security Administration, and he has completed a manuscript titled “The Law of Cybercrimes and Their Investigations.” (03/19/08)

Gerald B. Lefcourt, head of New York criminal defense firm, Gerald B. Lefcourt, P.C., is one of twelve members serving on the Judicial Nomination Commission tasked to submit candidates for Chief Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals to the governor. He is a past president of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and a past president of the New York Criminal Bar Association. Lefcourt is also a founder of the NYS Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. (10/01/08)

Arthur L. Alexander joined the New York office of Rick Steiner Fell & Benowitz LLP as a partner. He focuses his practice on real estate transactions and mortgage matters. (08/06/07)

Maury D. Locke, a retired senior counsel-international with United States Steel Corporation, recently established Lex Facultas LLC. The company represents a law group in India in outsourcing legal services from U.S. law firms and law departments to India. (10/10/07)

David N. Wechsler, formerly with Kurzman Eisenberg Corbin & Lever, LLP, joined the Long Island office of Moritt Hock Hamroff & Horowitz LLP as a partner in its tax, trusts and estates practice group. He concentrates his practice in all phases of estates and trusts law and also represents individuals and families with an array of asset valuations and classes. (08/06/07)

Alan E. Weiner, senior tax partner at the Long Island firm, Holtz Rubenstein Reminick LLP, was honored with the Kenneth McQuillan Award for lifetime achievement and service to DFK International. DFK International is a worldwide association of independent accounting firms. (10/10/07)

Robert S. Zeif, along with Eric I. Wrubel `95, formed the New York firm of Dobrish Zeif Gross & Wrubel, LLP. The firm concentrates exclusively on the practice of matrimonial and family law. (08/06/07)

1969
Charles Brandt, founder and senior partner of the Wilmington, Del.-based medical malpractice trial firm, Brandt & Dalton, P.A., recently retired. He is a former Chief Deputy Attorney General of Delaware and past president of the Delaware Trial Lawyer’s Association. Brandt is the author of several books; his most recent is Donnie Brasco - Unfinished Business. (03/19/08)

Stephen D. Lassar became a partner in the New York City office of Marcum & Kliegman LLP, an accounting and consulting firm. He focuses his practice on planning and problem solving for high-net-worth individuals and strategic planning for closely-held and family-owned companies. He was also named chairman of the NYS Society of CPA’s Estate Planning Committee. (07/21/08)

Vincent J. Syracuse, a senior partner with the New York firm of Tannenbaum Helpern Syracuse & Hirschtritt LLP and chair of its litigation and alternative dispute resolution department, recently completed three terms as the treasurer of the Commercial and Federal Litigation Section of the New York State Bar Association. He will continue as the Section’s Vice-Chair. A frequent chair or participant in NYSBA CLE programs, he was nominated by the Section for its 2007 Attorney Professionalism Award as a “tireless advocate for ethics and civility in New York.” He is also a member of the Advisory Committee for the Commercial Division of the Supreme Court of the State of New York and Chair of the Section’s Commercial Division Committee. 1971
Kenneth M. Block, formerly with Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner LLP, joined the New York office of Tannenbaum Helpern Syracuse & Hirschtritt LLP as a partner. He concentrates his practice in the areas of real estate, construction, and environmental law. He is the founder of the Real Estate Technology forum, an industry organization designed to promote the use of technology in real estate. He also co-authors a monthly column for the New York Law Journal on real estate finance. (09/14/07)

David Louis Cohen was elected to serve as vice-president for the Eleventh District of the NYS Bar Association’s Executive Committee. Cohen also serves as counsel to the NYS Assembly on Codes, where he advises the committee chair on proposed criminal justice legislation, drafts legislation, and negotiates budget and legislative issues with the governor’s office. He is also in private practice in Queens, primarily litigating in state and federal courts. (07/21/08)

Leonard D. Duboff, founder of Portland, Ore. firm The Duboff Law Group, LLC, which specializes in complex business litigation and intellectual property, was a key presenter at the First People’s Fund Conference in March 2008. The Fund supports the advancement of American Indian Arts through community spirit awards, and business leadership and grant fellowship programs. Duboff will also speak at the Association for Educational Communications and Technology Annual Convention in October 2008. He is the author of more than 20 books on law, including The Deskbook of Art Law, Art Law in a Nutshell, and The Law (In Plain English)® series. (03/19/08)

Robert H. Masnik who spent a long career practicing in tax qualified retirement plan law in both the public and private sectors, joined Raleigh, North Carolina restaurant, The Borough, as its alcohol beverage transportation specialist. (07/21/08)

Mark L. Zientz, principal in the Miami, Florida firm, Law Offices of Mark L. Zientz, was elected chair of the Worker’s Compensation Section of the Florida Bar. (09/17/07)

Alan E. Goldstein was named principal law clerk to Justice Robert M. Berliner of New York State Supreme Court, Rockland County. (03/19/08)

Stuart A. Hoberman, shareholder of the firm of Wilentz, Goldman & Spitzer, P.A. and chair of its financial services team, was designated as a 2007 Super Lawyer by Law& Politics Magazine. He concentrates his practice in all areas of banking and finance. He is on the board of directors of the New Jersey State Chamber of Commerce and past president of the New Jersey State Bar Association. (08/06/07)

Martin R. Press, shareholder and member of the Florida firm of Gunster, Yoakley & Stewart, P.A., was named a 2007 Florida Super Lawyer in taxation. He was also selected for inclusion in the UK-based Chambers and Partners’ directory of America’s leading business lawyers, the Chambers USA 2007. He focuses his practice on taxation, international taxation, estate planning and federal and state tax controversies. (08/06/07)

Arthur E. Shulman, who maintains a solo practice in Islandia, N.Y., is currently serving as the secretary of the Suffolk County Bar Association. He is a past dean of the Suffolk Academy of Law, the educational arm of the Suffolk County Bar Association. (03/19/08)

1974
Joseph S. Karp, principal of Florida firm, The Karp Law Firm, was a contributor to The CPA’s Guide to Long-Term Care Planning published in March 2008 by The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Karp focuses his practice on estate planning and elder law. His firm was recognized in the South Florida Business Journal’s 2008 “Book of Law,” an annual list of the region’s top large law firms. 1975
Howard L. Dorfman, formerly chief legal officer of the pharmaceutical division of Bayer Healthcare LLC, joined the New York office of Ropes & Gray LLP as counsel in its life sciences practice group. His practice focuses on regulation of pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies. (07/21/08)

William J. Froehlich was appointed an Administrative Judge on the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board Panel at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Previously, he was a member of the senior executive service at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, where he oversaw the agency’s trial staff in the adjudication of natural gas, oil pipeline and electric utility rates cases, the importation of liquefied natural gas, and the rates and charges for newly constructed pipelines. He played a key role in the prosecution of the Enron trading schemes and the negotiation of refunds to consumers arising from those schemes. (07/21/08)

Hazel I. Weiser was named executive director of the Society of American Law Teachers (SALT). The organization’s mission is to make the legal profession more inclusive, to enhance the quality of legal education, and to extend the power of legal representation to underserved individuals and communities. Prior to joining SALT, she was Director of Foundation Advancement at the Long Island Community Foundation, a division of The New York Community Trust. She formerly served as a member of the faculty of Touro Law Center and as the director of its legal writing program. (03/19/08)

1976
John R. Chaney was recently appointed by the Kings County District Attorney’s Office as Deputy Executive Director of ComALERT (Community and Law Enforcement Resources Together). ComALERT is a law enforcement program designed to reduce recidivism among parolees returning to Brooklyn by providing them with essential transitional resources including vocational, educational and substance abuse treatment services. Prior to joining the DA’s office, he worked as a program development and fundraising consultant for non profit organizations offering resources to urban populations at high risk for criminal justice involvement. John H. Fitzhugh was elected president and chief executive officer of the Union Mutual of Vermont Companies, where he had previously served as senior vice president and general counsel. Located in Montpelier, the company provides personal and commercial insurance products. He also served as counsel to Vermont governors Richard Snelling and Howard Dean. (07/21/08)

Andrew B. Kushner, a partner in the New Jersey firm of Asbell Kushner & Eutsler, P.A., was awarded a 2007 Professional Lawyer of the Year Award by the New Jersey Commission on Professionalism in the Law. He practices in the areas of estate planning and administration, elder law and Medicaid planning, residential and commercial real property and business transactions. He also represents attorneys in ethics and fee matters. He is a past president of both the Camden County Bar Association and the Bar’s Charity Foundation, and is a current member and former chair of both the District IV Ethics and Fee Arbitration Committees. Sherri A. Venokur joined the New York office of Lowenstein Sandler PC as a member of the firm’s investment management practice. She negotiates ISDA and other master agreements for derivatives transactions as well as prime brokerage and other trading documentation for dealers, hedge funds and other market participants. She was previously special counsel to Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP in the firm’s derivatives and commodities, and structure finance practices. (03/19/08)

Sean F.X. Dugan, a senior partner at Martin Clearwater & Bell, LLP, was elected to the board of directors of Phelps Memorial Hospital Center in Westchester, New York. He focuses his practice on the defense of all aspects of professional liability claims on behalf of physicians and other health care professionals, medical groups, and heath care institutions. Avery E. Neumark, the partner-in-charge of employee benefits and executive compensation with the New York accounting and consulting firm of, Rosen Seymour Shapss Martin & Company LLP, was elected as a director-at-large of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants for the fiscal year 2008-2009. Neumark is a member of the ABA’s Employee Benefits Committee and is chairman of the Fringe Benefits Subcommittee. (07/21/08)

Edward A. Steen was appointed associate general counsel – chief intellectual property counsel of Vale Inco Limited of Toronto, Canada. Steen, who has been with the company for 29 years, is based in the company’s Saddle Brook, N.J. office. Vale Inco Limited, a major global supplier of nickel and other non-ferrous metals, was recently acquired by Brazilian company Companhia Vale do Rio Doce SA, the second largest mining company in the world. William H. Schrag, formerly with Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP, joined the New York office of Dewey Ballantine LLP as a partner in its corporate reorganization and bankruptcy group. He focuses his practice in the areas of bankruptcy, creditors’ rights and commercial litigation. (09/17/07)

1979
Romaine L. Gardner, visiting professor and director of the Securities Arbitration Clinic at Fordham University School of Law, was given the honorary title of Distinguished Practitioner in Residence. Gardner started his legal career at Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, LLP and then moved to PaineWebber UBS where he retired as managing attorney in 1998. He was the director of the first Securities Arbitration Clinic at Brooklyn Law School, where he taught securities arbitration. (03/19/08)

Charles-Eric Gordon was elected first vice president of the Society of Professional Investigators, a fraternal and educational organization. Gordon, an investigative counsel to the bar and real estate industry, focuses his practice in locating missing witnesses, heirs, distributees, defendants and other absentees. He is a member of the World Association of Detectives and the American Academy for Professional Law Enforcement. (03/19/08)

Ellen T. Harmon was appointed executive vice president, chief legal officer and corporate secretary of ATMI, Inc., a company that provides specialty materials and high-purity materials handling and delivery solutions to the worldwide semiconductor industry. Prior to joining the company, Harmon was vice president, general counsel, and corporate secretary of WHX Corporation and its operating company, Handy & Harmon, a diversified manufacturer. (03/19/08)

Bradley S. Keller, cofounder of the Seattle trial law firm, Byrnes & Keller LLP, was the lead attorney for the owners of NBA team, The Sonics, in their suit to move the team from Seattle to Oklahoma City, which ended with a legal settlement allowing the move. Keller focuses his practice on business and tort litigation and has represented several fortune 500 companies, including R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. in lawsuits by formers smokers and the state of Washington. (07/21/08)

John M. Leventhal was appointed by Governor Spitzer to New York’s Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department. In 1994 he was elected to serve as a Justice of the NYS Supreme Court in Kings County and, since 1996, he has been designated to preside over the nation’s first felony Domestic Violence Court. Richard D Ribakove, president of Mooney-General Paper Co. in Hillside, N.J., was elected to the board of directors of The United Group (TUG) in March 2008. TUG is a nationwide buying group owned and directed by independent distributors who target the janitorial/sanitary, food service, industrial-packaging, and safety equipment and supplies markets. 1980s

1981
Marcia Z. Gordon, previously a partner at Buchalter Nemer, joined the Los Angeles office of Holme Roberts & Owen LLP as a partner. Gordon, who has a broad practice representing local, national, and international clients in a variety of complex transactional real estate matters, is establishing the firm’s real estate practice. Lawrence R. Plotkin, formerly with Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, joined the New York office of Chadbourne & Parke LLP as a partner in the firm’s real estate practice group. Plotkin represents clients in commercial real estate transactions, including the purchase, sale, financing, development and leasing of all types of commercial properties. (01/03/08)

Lawrence N. Rogak, managing partner of the Long Island insurance defense firm, Lawrence N. Rogak LLC, published Rogak’s New York No Fault Law & Practice. He also writes a daily newsletter, The Rogak Report, which examines and explains the latest liability case law. (08/06/07)

William T. Mantlo was a name known to fans of comics in the ‘70s and ‘80s. During a 15-year stint at Marvel Comics, he wrote more than 500 stories for the Incredible Hulk, Spectacular Spider-Man, Micronauts and ROM: Spaceknight, among others. After graduating BLS, he became a public defender at The Legal Aid Society. But in 1992, he suffered traumatic head injuries in a hit and run accident that ended his career.
