Sparer Internship Stipend and Travel Allowance Disbursement

Stipend Payment
Fellows receive $5,000 (less taxes) for a 10 week, full time placement at a non-profit organization, disbursed in three checks: $2,500 at the beginning of the summer; $2,250 at midsummer, and $250 upon receipt of your internship report. Please note that disbursement is contingent upon submission of the biographical sketch by February 1st and the required employment forms below by May 1st. The I-9 and W-4 should be turned in to Christina Wallace in the Human Resources Office on the second floor at One Boerum Place. The Employment Information form should be turned in to Elizabeth Kane in the Public Service Programs Office with a copy to Christina Wallace.

Deadline
Payment of the stipend (and any travel expenses) is contingent on turning in your Employment Information Form, your I-9 and W-4 by May 1 of your internship year.

Method of Payment
You may elect to pick up your checks or have them sent to an address you provide, or have them direct deposited. Please set up your preference with Christina Wallace.

Travel Allowance
For those of you who have placements outside of the New York City Metropolitan area, the Sparer Program will reimburse your travel expenses at the lowest available fare with prior approval and up to a maximum set by the Program Director. Requests should be submitted to Charles Krause by May 1, and should detail your method of travel and cost, and be accompanied by fare information and receipts.

Required Forms

  1. Employment Information Form (PDF)
Please obtain a description of your duties from your prospective supervisor, and fill out that section of the form. Send or fax the completed Employment Information Form to your supervisor solely for his or her signature. You may have it faxed back to the attention of Elizabeth Kane, Public Service Programs Office, 718-780-0374, if helpful, or drop off the completed form to the Public Service Program Office, along with a copy to Christina Wallace.

  2. Federal I-9 and W-4
The I-9  (PDF) verifies your eligibility for employment. Fill out Section 1 completely, list the documents you will present for verification in Section 2, and return it to Christina Wallace on the second floor at One Boerum Place to review and complete the certification. The W-4 (PDF) allows you to control withholding tax. Fill out items 1 through 6 (or 7) sign, and date. Christina Wallace will complete items 8, 9 and 10.

Please Note: the "employer" for items 8, 9 and 10 on the W-4, and for the certification in Section 2 of the I-9, is "Brooklyn Law School." Your internship employer does not deal with these forms.

  3. A short biographical description
Please see the current biographical descriptions at "Meet the Fellows" for examples of the style, length and format they should follow. Biographical descriptions are due by February 1st and should be e-mailed to charles.krause@brooklaw.edu.
