
The Steering Committee of the Center consists of professors who have a special expertise and interest in the field of international business law. Listed below are brief bios of these faculty. For more detailed information on each of the professors click on a name below.
Roberta S. Karmel
Chairperson of the Steering Committee; Co-Director of the Center and
Professor of Law
Professor Karmel is a former Securities and Exchange
Commissioner and Director of the New York Stock Exchange who teaches and
writes on international securities regulation. She was a
Fulbright Scholar studying securities regulation in the European
Community. She has taught courses in Melbourne, Shanghai, Frankfurt,
Paris, London, and Bologna. She is a member of the Securities Regulation
Committee of the International Law Association.
Arthur R. Pinto
Co-Director of the Center and Professor of Law; Co-Director of the Law School's Summer Abroad Program in Bologna, Italy
Professor Pinto has served as a national
reporter for several Congresses of the International Academy of
Comparative Law. He has written a book on corporate law and co-edited a
book on comparative corporate governance. He currently serves on the editorial board of the International and Comparative Law Journal.
James A. Fanto
Associate Director of the Center and Professor of Law
Professor Fanto clerked for Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun and practiced international corporate law in the United States and France. His writings focus on French
corporate and securities law and comparative corporate governance. He
directs the Law School's International Economics Law Forums.
Claire R. Kelly
Associate Director of the Center and Assistant Professor of Law
Professor Kelly writes in the area of customs and international trade
law. She was in practice with a major law firm, where she advised
companies on governmental compliance and litigated international trade
matters.
Dana Brakman Reiser
Associate Professor of Law
Professor Brakman Reiser teaches Corporations, Law of Nonprofit Organizations and Property. An expert in the emerging field of the law of nonprofit organizations, she has been at the forefront of research in this area. Her current research and writing focuses on nonprofit governance, specifically on issues of responsibility and accountability.
Neil B. Cohen
Professor of Law
Professor Cohen teaches commercial and corporate law and writes
extensively in the domestic and international commercial law areas. He is
involved in the revision of several portions of the Uniform Commercial
Code and serves as Reporter for the American Law Institute's
International Secured Transactions Project. He has advised and lectured
on commercial law in the Americas, Austria, Bolivia, and the Ukraine.
Steven A. Dean
Assistant Professor of Law
Professor Dean’s research explores issues related to U.S. federal income tax law, such as the implications of making the tax treatment of business entities independent of “real world” facts. In addition, his research examines the role of current and historical tax policy in shaping the tax laws, and the economic fortunes, of the developing world. Prior to joining the Law School, Professor Dean worked for several years as a tax associate at two major law firms. Most recently he was with Debevoise & Plimpton, and prior to that he was with Cravath, Swaine & Moore.
Maryellen Fullerton
Professor of Law
Professor Fullerton specializes in international litigation, immigration law, and refugee and political asylum law. She has been a Fulbright Scholar in
Germany and Belgium. She has served on several human rights missions
to Germany and as a Reporter for Human Rights Watch/Helsinki.
Michael A. Gerber
Associate Dean for Development and Professor of Law
Dean Gerber teaches in the area of bankruptcy and commercial law and is the author of a leading casebook on business reorganizations. His
articles and lectures have focused on bankruptcy issues including governance, ethics, and the treatment of intellectual property interests.
Edward J. Janger
Professor of Law
Professor Janger teaches and writes in the area of bankruptcy and
commercial law. He practiced in those areas of bankruptcy with a major law firm in Washington, D.C., and clerked for a
United States Court of Appeals Judge for the Fifth Circuit.
Beryl R. Jones-Woodin
Professor of Law and Associate Dean for Student Affairs
Professor Jones teaches and writes in the areas of domestic and international
copyright and intellectual property law. She is a member of the editorial
board of the Journal of the Copyright Society of the U.S.A.
Samuel K. Murumba
Professor of Law
Professor Murumba is the author of several books and articles on
intellectual property and the legal process and is the co-author of the
prestigious restatement of the laws of Australia. He is active in human
rights work and has taught in Uganda and Australia.
Lawrence M. Solan
Don Forchelli Professor of Law and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs
Dean Solan teaches Comparative Legislation, Contracts, Insurance Law and related courses. Dean Solan holds a Ph.D. in linguistics and his scholarly works are devoted to exploring interdisciplinary issues related to language and law. He is director of the Law School's Center for the Study of Law, Language and Cognition. His highly acclaimed book, The Language of Judges (1993), is widely recognized as the seminal work on linguistic theory and legal argumentation.
