Public Interest and Government Internships
Students wishing to have paid public service internships will apply to government agencies and public interest non-profits as they would any other job. While few organizations pay students directly, eligible student may receive a stipend the School's Public Service Grants, a fellowship program such as the Edward V. Sparer or BLSPI Fellowship Programs, or another stipend source. Students will find placements tailored to their interests through, among other things, job fairs, Career Center and Public Service Programs Office listings and assistance, and employment databases including PSLawNet and CSM. As an alternative to receiving a stipend for an internship, students may wish to receive clinical credit. For more information, visit the Clinical Programs section of our web site.
When selecting a public service internship, students need to consider the legal subject area that interest them, the type of experience they seek such as direct services (involving client contact and litigation) or research and writing, and the setting (government or non-profit).
Public interest and government internships offer very different things to students, and most are extremely competitive. Students are advised to work with their counselor or the Public Service Programs Office director to sort through their options and develop competitive job search documents.
