Externships for Credit
Brooklyn Law School offers one of the largest clinical externship programs of any law school in the country. Each semester and during the summer, more than 150 students intern for academic credit in government agencies, public interest organizations, judicial chambers and, in limited situations, in private, for-profit offices such as entertainment law firms and companies, and general counsel offices of corporations.

Finding an Externship
In almost all cases, the process of applying for and obtaining credit for an externship should begin with a meeting with your career counselor.

Listings for civil and judicial credit-bearing externships are posted by the Career Center in its Symplicity Corporation's Career Services Manager ("CSM"). These listings bear a legend that they have been approved for credit. Since many judges do not formally list their externship positions, however, the Career Center maintains current lists of the federal judiciary nationwide, and of the New York State judiciary. Externship applications from students are always welcomed in chambers both for the academic semesters and the summer, and judicial externships are always approved for credit.

You should also consult PSLawNet for additional government and public interest externships.

Please note that PSLaw Net listings, and any other placements that you obtain on your own, are not pre-approved for credit. You must submit a proposed externship request form (see below) to Keysha Stevenson in the Career Center. After evaluating the proposed placement, the Career Center will let you know whether it has been approved for credit.

Obtaining Credit for Your Externship
Please be sure to read the materials below for important information about Civil Practice and Judicial Clerkship Externships for credit.

Once you have obtained an externship, you will need to complete the appropriate Enrollment Form and submit it to Keysha Stepheson in the Career Center. You will then be assigned to a particular seminar by the Clinic Office.
