In the Spring 2010 issue of LawNotes, we published a feature story entitled “Mergers & Acquisitions,” in which we shared six stories of BLS alumni who met at the Law School and married – one couple from every decade from the 1950s through the present day. The story was inspired by Joshua D. Kirshner ’04 and Amy Rozenfeld ’04, a couple who met and fell in love while at the Law School.
In researching “Mergers & Acquisitions,” we discovered that hundreds of couples had met at BLS, and there are many more BLS alumni who met before or after law school. In fact, there are so many couples that we hosted a Valentine’s Day party last February to celebrate their love of the law…and each other.
We are delighted to present an ever-growing section of our Web site dedicated to couples who credit BLS as both their alma matter and their dating service. We received emails and letters from many couples who wrote in to tell us, in their own words, the story of their own “mergers and acquisitions.” We look forward to hearing from more couples, and welcome stories of all partnerships for inclusion on the site.

“As the story now goes (or as I tell it to our children, Matthew 21 and Melanie 19), during the break between the end of our first semester of law school at BLS in December 2000, Susan Orr, a student in Section 3, began chasing me around the cafeteria in the basement of the building at 250 Joralemon. Frankly, I was flabbergasted that she would attempt to interrupt my studying. However, in a moment between bites of my grilled cheese sandwich made by Vinny, the proprietor of the cafeteria, I sensed something special about Susan. So, as the fable (I mean story) continues, I allowed her to continue to chase me around the cafeteria, the second floor of the library (where I studied regularly), to Brooklyn Heights, through Carroll Gardens, and all the way to Prospect Park, where BLS had a fantastic flag football intramural league every Saturday morning. Susan and I even remain dear friends with many of my teammates from FERDER, the 1981, 1982, and 1983 league champions. We graduated from BLS in 1983 and married in 1986. We are now approaching our 25th wedding anniversary – holy cow! Who would've thunk it then?

“David and I met during our first year of law school in February of 1981. We married in March of 1984 and just celebrated our 26th year of marriage. To say the least, we owe a lot to BLS and the friends who introduced us (we were in different sections).”

“After 25 years, we still find ways to argue about the law.”

“My husband and I were in the same section during our first year of BLS (1980-1981). We married on March 13, 1983 before graduation. In 1990 we formed Schillinger & Finsterwald, LLP, and still successfully practice real estate and commercial litigation together. In addition to our professional partnership, Peter and I are the proud parents of two children, Daniel Schillinger, 22, and Hannah Schillinger, 19. Daniel is a recent graduate of Carleton College who is marrying this summer and this fall will begin graduate studies for a PhD in Political Science at The University of Toronto. Hannah is completing her first year at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.”
