Senate Judicial Confirmation Hearings Held for Hon. Nelson Stephen Román '89 and Prof. Claire R. Kelly '93 1/25/2013
Five federal judicial nominees appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee on January 23. Of the five nominees, two were Brooklyn Law School graduates: Nelson S. Román ’89, who was nominated by President Barack Obama to a seat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, and Professor Claire R. Kelly ‘93, who was nominated by the President to the Court of International Trade. Read more.
Sparkle Sooknanan ’10 to Clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor 12/20/2012
Sparkle L. Sooknanan ’10 will be clerking for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor starting in July 2013. Sooknanan previously served as a law clerk to Judge Eric N. Vitaliano of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York and Judge Guido Calabresi of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. She is currently on the Appellate Staff of the Civil Division of the Department of Justice. Read more.
Lisa Bova-Hiatt ’94 Oversees Staten Island Sandy Relief Efforts 12/19/2012
Lisa Bova-Hiatt ‘94 spends most days as the Deputy Chief in charge of eminent domain in the Tax & Bankruptcy Litigation Division at the New York Law Department. But when Superstorm Sandy battered her native Staten Island, her “real” job took a back seat to her other role: as a member of “Team Staten Island,” a small group organized by the Mayor’s Office to coordinate shelters and emergency response teams in the face of impending storms. On November 17, the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) honored the recipients of the “2012 Best Lawyers Under 40 Award” at the NAPABA Anniversary Gala and Celebration Dinner held in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes talented Asian Pacific American attorneys under the age of 40 who have achieved prominence in their respective areas of law while demonstrating an unwavering commitment to the Asian Pacific American community. Out of 21 nationwide recipients, two BLS graduates, Rio Guerrero ’98 and Vinoo Varghese ’00, were awarded this distinguished honor. Read more.

Michelle Kaminsky’s ’92 new book, Reflections of a Domestic Violence Prosecutor, draws upon her fifteen years of prosecutorial experience in New York. Kaminsky, the Deputy Bureau Chief in the Domestic Violence Bureau of the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office seeks to explain “how societal beliefs about women, inadequate laws, judicial biases, inflexible prosecution policies and a lack of resources prevent meaningful change for battered women in the criminal justice system.” Read more.

Hon. I. Leo Glasser '48 and Hon. Arthur D. Spatt '49 were recently profiled in Newsday as two of five federal court judges in New York state who fought in World War II. The three other judges include Hon. Leonard D. Wexler, Hon. Thomas C. Platt, and Hon. Jack B. Weinstein, who has previously taught at Brooklyn Law School. Read more.
