Brian P. Stern '91 Appointed Chief of Staff Rhode Island Governor
Brian P. Stern '91 was named Chief of Staff to Governor Donald L. Carcieri of Rhode Island, and began his new appointment in March. Stern has been in public service since 1998, serving in various positions in the Rhode Island state government.
Since January 2005, Stern served as the Executive Director of the Rhode Island Department of Administration, where he acted as the State Purchasing Agent and oversaw legal services within the executive branch and the Governor's Fiscal Fitness program. He first joined the Rhode Island Department of Administration in March 2004 as the Executive Counsel and the Administrator of Legal Services. Previously, he served as the Deputy Chief of Legal Services and Chief Securities Examiner at the Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation.
Stern credits his interest in government to his experience at Brooklyn Law School. While in law school, he interned at both the Securities Division of the New York State Attorney General's Office and the Enforcement Division of the New York Stock Exchange. "It was very important for my future to be able to get practical experience in addition to my coursework," said Stern.
Building on his positive experience, Stern instituted an internship program at the executive branch of the Rhode Island State Government six years ago that is loosely modeled on the BLS internship programs. Forty students have already completed the program, and it has been such a success that Stern hopes to replicate it at the Governor's Office.
Prior to relocating to Rhode Island to work in government, Stern was a partner in a private law practice in New York City from 1991 to 1998. Stern also served as an Adjunct Professor at Roger Williams University School of Law from 2001 to 2005 teaching securities regulation.
