Visiting Nonmatriculants
Special Nonmatriculants
Foreign-Trained Lawyers

Nonmatriculants are non-degree candidates and are categorized as visiting, special or international students who are enrolled for credit in one or more courses at Brooklyn Law School but are not matriculated in the School's Juris Doctor degree program. Visiting and special nonmatriculants are admitted at the discretion of the Dean of Admissions. International nonmatriculants are admitted under the Foreign-Trained Lawyers Program.

All applicants for admission as nonmatriculants, regardless of category, must: (1) complete the Law School's application for admission; and (2) submit a statement that requests admission as either a visiting, special or international nonmatriculant and clarifies the reasons why such admission is desired.

These items must be filed with the Admissions Office as soon as possible and prior to the start of the academic year for which admission is sought. Other application requirements may vary, depending upon the nonmatriculant category, as noted below.

At the time of admission, all visiting, special and international nonmatriculants are required to pay a $300 seat deposit, which is refundable in full or part depending upon the date of withdrawal, as well as a non-refundable $25 registration fee. Tuition for all nonmatriculants is charged by the term (unless they are taking fewer than eight credits, in which case they are charged per credit) and must be paid in full prior to the start of each term. Note: Nonmatriculants are not eligible to receive institutionally funded financial assistance from Brooklyn Law School.

Visiting Nonmatriculants
Students in good standing, who have completed a minimum of one year as Juris Doctor degree candidates at other law schools that are approved by the American Bar Association and are members of the Association of American Law Schools, may attend Brooklyn Law School as nonmatriculants provided the credit earned here is to be transferred to the degree-granting law school. Such students must maintain the scholastic requirements expected of candidates for the Juris Doctor degree at our school.

Ordinarily, visiting nonmatriculants will not be allowed to remain at the Law School for more than two semesters, nor will they normally be permitted to transfer into Brooklyn Law School as matriculated students.

As an applicant to this non-degree program, you will need to submit certain credentials, in addition to our application materials. Please visit the How to Apply section of our Web site for specific documentary requirements and application forms.

Special Nonmatriculants
Juris Doctor degree graduates of other law schools that are approved by the American Bar Association and are members of the Association of American Law Schools may attend Brooklyn Law School as special nonmatriculants. Such students may take a maximum of 16 credits per semester if enrolled in the full-time division or 12 credits per semester if enrolled in the part-time division. Special nonmatriculants are usually permitted to enroll at the Law School for only one semester.

As an applicant to this non-degree program, you will need to submit certain credentials, in addition to our application materials. Please visit the How to Apply section of our Web site for specific documentary requirements and application forms.

Foreign-Trained Lawyers Program (International Nonmatriculants)

The Foreign-Trained Lawyers Program at Brooklyn Law School affords graduates of law schools in foreign countries an opportunity to become eligible to take the New York State Bar examination by completing a program of study in professional law subjects that includes basic courses in American law.

Rule 520.6 of the Rules of the New York Court of Appeals for the Admission of Attorneys and Counselors at Law stipulates that attorneys who have completed a foreign legal education substantially the equivalent in duration of an American legal education, at an accredited school in a foreign country which does not follow the common law, may qualify to take the New York bar examination by earning a minimum of 20 credits from an accredited United States law school. Persons seeking to utilize this rule will be considered for admission to Brooklyn Law School as international nonmatriculants.

Students admitted as Foreign Trained Lawyers must complete a program of study in professional law subjects that include basic courses in American Law. This required curriculum is taken in the form of a full-time course load, during daytime hours, for two semesters. Students pay the prevailing full-time tuition rate. There is no Brooklyn Law School financial assistance available for the non-degree program. Evening classes are normally not available to students enrolled in the Foreign Trained Lawyers Program.

We have found through experience that in order for international nonmatriculants to maximize their chances of acquiring necessary substantive knowledge, students enrolled in the program must consider their participation to be a full-time undertaking. Under no circumstances may enrolled students be engaged in outside employment in excess of 20 hours per week.

As an applicant to this non-degree program, you will need to submit certain credentials, in addition to our application materials. Please visit the How to Apply section of our Web site for specific documentary requirements and application forms.
