Psychiatry and Criminal Law

This course examines the interplay between psychiatry and the criminal justice system, and the relationship between mental illness and criminal conduct. Topics of discussion will include the insanity defense, competency to stand trial, false confessions, posttraumatic stress disorder, amnesia, malingering, personality disorders and substance abuse. Throughout the semester, a number of renowned forensic psychiatrists, including Stuart Klienman, M.D, will join the class as guest speakers.

Grading and Method of Evaluation

Letter grade with pass/fail option. Students may write a paper in lieu of the exam.
