With $1.66 million dollars obtained for three distressed low-income cooperatives in as many days of closings, the corporate and real estate clinic wrapped up an extremely productive semester.
BLS Announces New Mandatory Clinic Requirement; Ranks as a ‘Top School for Clinics’
Brooklyn Law School, well known as a trailblazer in providing clinic experience, recently created a new mandate that students complete at least one clinic or externship course before graduation. The new guidelines, which take effect with this fall’s entering class, are not a radical departure for the Law School: Nearly all BLS students already fulfill the clinic requirement. The announcement coincides with a National Jurist survey that included BLS among the top 20 “law schools for clinics.”
Brooklyn Law School Partners with Labaton Sucharow on New Securities Arbitration Clinic
The Securities Arbitration Clinic at Brooklyn Law School is a new partnership formed in September with Labaton Sucharow, one of the world’s leading firms in securities litigation. The program serves a dual purpose: to assist defrauded individual investors who cannot otherwise afford to pay for legal counsel; and to provide students with real-world experience in securities arbitration and litigation.
Professor Stacy Caplow Named Associate Dean for Professional Legal Education
This August, Dean Nick Allard recognized Professor Caplow’s leadership by appointing her to a new role: Associate Dean for Professional Legal Education. The newly created position will encompass not only clinical education but also simulation courses, the Office of Public Service Programs, and other aspects of professional skills and career development.
Brooklyn Law School Launches Elder Rights Clinic
This fall marks the launch of the Elder Rights Clinic at Brooklyn Law School. The news is timely: As more baby boomers enter the 60+ age bracket, the legal needs of older adults will continue to expand dramatically.

Military Clinic Launches JAG Careers
In March 2011, BLS added an innovative program to its roster of clinics. Taught by then-Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Hennigan, a Major in the Air Force reserve with 12 years of Judge Advocate General (JAG) experience, the Military Legal Practice Clinic provides a foundation in military law to BLS students.
Safe Harbor Clinic Gains Asylum for Transgender Client
Ilan Wong ’12, Sara Fraser ’13, and Natalie Serra ’13 from the Safe Harbor Clinic successfully gained asylum for their client, a transgender woman from Mexico. The client had taken critical steps in her gender transition and would have been in exceptional danger if she returned to her home country.

Community Development Clinic Charters NYC Peace Museum
With the aid of Professor David Reiss and the students in the Community Development Clinic, the NYC Peace Museum is one step closer to opening its doors. BLS students Vincent DiForte ’14, Evan Rosin ’13, Kenneth Craig Reilly ’13, Kyle Antonelli ‘12, Stuart Linder ‘12 and Cameron Weil ’13 helped charter the museum, a process that includes making an application to the NYS Board of Regents. The students have also provided advice and counsel to the Museum’s board and founders.

Professor Jonathan Askin was recently interviewed by New Learning Times about the Brooklyn Law Incubator & Policy (BLIP) Clinic and its role in online and digital rights advocacy. Regarding the "hacker ethos" he hopes to instill in the next generation of Internet and tech lawyers, he explains that "[every] revolution requires those trained in law to frame the political, legal, social, and business rules and structures."
