Information for Students
The Civil Practice Externship is divided into practice areas based on the nature of the field work. Students will be assigned to a seminar in the practice area most relevant to their placements. The areas are:

Entertainment
The students in this group will be interning in offices that represent the interests of individuals or groups engaged in the Arts—including authors, musicians and artists. There may also be students placed in sports law offices or practices. The seminar focus includes issues like rights of artists and performers, and the power and practices of the corporate interests.
Individual Rights and Representation
There are many offices throughout the New York area whose primary function is the protection and enhancement of individual rights including health, housing benefits and entitlements, women’s issues and family law matters. The work of these offices varies, but all generally involve substantial client contact, and frequently advocacy in “poor people’s courts.” The focus of the seminar will include examining how the legal system affects the individual rights of persons of limited means.
Securities and Market Regulation
The students in this group will be placed in offices that are concerned with some aspect of the regulation of securities or commodities markets. The group includes both state and federal regulatory offices, as well as self-regulatory organizations. In the seminar, there will be discussions of various types of enforcement and regulatory procedures, and some comparison of substantive laws and rules pertaining to market regulation.
Government Litigation and Counsel
The areas of practice included in this group will vary from tax law to civil rights, and the practice may be litigation, policy, advisory or legislation oriented. Because of the variety of settings, the seminar does not focus on any specific area of substantive law or procedure. Some offices may involve more client contact, others more contact with attorneys and politicians. Most of these placements will entail a substantial amount of research and writing. In the seminar for this group there will be some discussion and practice of various skills and performances commonly associated with the work of these offices. In addition, there will be numerous opportunities to explore the issues pertaining to the power and discretion of government attorneys, responsibilities and restraints.
Corporate Counsel
The work of the General Counsel to the corporation is diverse, relating to many different areas of law and practice. Students who have obtained approved internships in general counsels’ offices will be exposed to the myriad issues and tasks of corporate counsel. The seminar will often feature guest lecturers from practice.
