Brooklyn Law School Roundtable Explores Revised Article 9 of the UCC

Article 9 of the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) has just been comprehensively revised for the first time since its inception, almost forty years ago. This amended statute will become effective on July 1, 2001 in about 40 states and as a result, rules governing secured credit in the United States will be transformed. On Wednesday, April 18, a group of New York City's most distinguished lawyers, judges, and academics will gather for at Brooklyn Law School "A Quick Tour Of Article 9".

The Barry L. Zaretsky Roundtable Program will focus on a hypothetical credit transaction to explore how changes in the law will affect the creation of the credit package, how the lawyer's work is different because of the new statute, and how both the lender's and the debtor's options and positions are changed. Among the topics that the group will consider:

  • How the revised statute's broader scope enables parties to get access to better credit terms based on their assets.
  • The effect of an increased emphasis on receivables and other intangible assets.
  • The intersection of intellectual property law and the changes in the new statute.
  • How the revised statute affects a debtor in financial distress and an overview of new guidelines to work out bankruptcies.
The Roundtable Program celebrates the life of Professor Barry L. Zaretsky (1950-1997), who was a teacher and mentor to countless Brooklyn Law School Students and a distinguished bankruptcy and commercial law scholar. The Roundtable Series brings together, on a regular basis, distinguished practitioners, judges and academics to discuss cutting edge bankruptcy and commercial law topics.

The Roundtable begins with dinner at 6:30 p.m. followed by the interactive discussion which runs until 9:00 p.m. The event will be held in the Subotnick Conference Center at Brooklyn Law School: 250 Joralemon Street.
